5 Diuretic Teas Against Fluid Retention

The accumulation of water in the tissue causes edema. The reason for this is a disturbed water-electrolyte balance. Triggers can be, for example, excessive salt intake, disorders of the lymphatic system, hormonal disorders, kidney and heart diseases or certain drugs.

Various natural remedies can be beneficial for draining the stored fluid because they are gentle and have no harmful side effects. However, you should discuss this with your doctor beforehand!

1. Diuretic teas: birch tea

Birch leaves are characterized by their dehydrating properties, which stimulate urine production and drain stored fluids from the organism.

  • 1 teaspoon dried birch leaves (5 g)
  • 1 cup of water (250 ml)


  • Scald the birch leaves with boiling water and let them steep for 10 minutes.
  • Then pour through a sieve to remove the solids.


    • Have one cup in the morning and another in the afternoon.
    • You should take this tea every day for at least 3 weeks.

    Note: Pregnant women as well as people with high blood pressure or heart disease must refrain from this tea! 

    2. Diuretic teas: Willow bark tea

    The draining properties of willow bark are  perfect for relieving edema and associated pain.

    The willow bark contains essential oils, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that remove harmful substances through the urine.


    • 1 teaspoon willow bark (5 g)
    • 1 cup of water (250 ml)


    • Pour boiling water over the willow bark and cover it for 10 minutes.
    • Then sieve.


    • Drink one cup of it in the morning for 2 weeks.

      Note: People who are allergic to aspirin or who suffer from respiratory allergies or stomach ulcers should avoid this tea.

      Green tea has long been very popular in natural medicine because it has numerous health-promoting properties.

      It contains a wealth of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that  aid in the body’s drainage and detoxification. 


      • 1 teaspoon green tea (5 g)
      • 1 cup of water (250 ml)


      • Scald a teaspoon of green tea with boiling water and let it steep for 10 minutes.
      • Then pour through a sieve and drink.


      • Drink a cup of green tea on an empty stomach every day for 3 weeks.

      Note: Green tea is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women as well as patients with high blood pressure and nervousness. 

      4. Diuretic teas: Artichoke tea

      Artichoke tea is one of the best home remedies for stored liquids. This not only stimulates the liver function,  but also promotes cleansing of the kidneys. 

      In addition, this tea helps with pain caused by swelling.


      • ½ artichoke
      • 1 cup of water (250 ml)


      • Put the artichoke leaves one at a time in the boiling water.
      • Reduce the temperature and let the leaves simmer for 2 to 3 minutes.
      • Then take it off the stove, let it steep and strain.


      • Drink this tea on an empty stomach and, if you wish, another cup in the afternoon.
      • It is best to drink the tea daily for 2 to 3 weeks.

      Note: People with gallstones should avoid this tea because it contains oxalates.

      Dandelions stand out for their diuretic properties. This can be used to drain fluids and cleanse the blood. 


      • 1 tablespoon of dandelion (10 g)
      • 1 cup of water (250 ml)


      • Scald the dandelion with boiling water and leave it covered for 5 to 10 minutes.
      • Then pour through a sieve to remove the solids.


      • Have a cup of it in the morning.
      • Consume dandelion tea every day for 2 weeks.

      Note: Pregnant women or patients with gallbladder or stomach problems should not consume this tea.
