With this homemade gargle solution you can relieve a sore throat and promote healing.
Of course there are various gargle solutions in stores and in pharmacies that are supposed to provide relief for sore throats, but such preparations are not always useful because they “shoot sparrows with cannons”. Today we will explain to you how you can make a soothing gargle solution yourself that will give you relief.
Gargle solution for a sore throat?
Why you should use a gargle solution for a sore throat is actually obvious :
Lozenges and similar products can only work where the saliva flows during the swallowing process. This is usually the throat and not the tonsils or higher and laterally located areas.
However, the throat can hurt especially in the areas not reached by candy and saliva.
The same problem arises with teas and other beverages. These also only ever reach the areas in the throat and pharynx that the drink passes through during the swallowing process.
A gargle solution, on the other hand, is better, because if you put your head back, you can also reach higher and especially lateral areas.
The ingredients for your homemade gargle solution for sore throats are all of natural origin and contain no preservatives. Therefore, you should also keep the gargle solution in the refrigerator so that it remains stable.
In winter, the windowsill at the workplace etc. is also a good replacement for a refrigerator.
It is important that you dispose of the rest of the liquid after the symptoms have subsided and that you clean the container well. The next time you have a cold with a sore throat, you can easily find a new solution!
You need for 2-3 gargles:
- 100ml water
- 50 drops of propolis
- 50g ginger (freshly grated)
- 10g cinnamon (dried & ground)
- Zest of the peel ½ lemon (absolutely from organic cultivation!) Or pure essential lemon oil
- 25g honey
- Boil the water and add cinnamon, ginger and grated lemon zest to the still boiling water.
- Then let the brew stand and steep for at least 10 minutes.
- If you use essential oil, only add it after it has cooled down.
- Then add honey and propolis and pour the liquid through a very fine sieve or a tea or coffee filter.
- After filtering, bottle and refrigerate.
Effect of the ingredients
Use the gargle solution undiluted and put your head really far back in order to achieve the largest possible area. The ingredients provide healing and relief as follows:
Cinnamon bark has an antimicrobial effect. The cinnamaldehyde contained in the cinnamon bark is an effective “microbe killer”.
With cinnamon, please always make sure that you use pure cinnamon and not a spice mixture with cinnamon! “Ceylon Cinnamon” and “Cassia Cinnamon” are available in stores. The former is a little milder and has a finer rind. Cassia cinnamon comes from China and has a stronger flavor.
Honey has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects and promotes healing. Ideal for use on red, sore and sore throat and throat!
The sweetness of the honey also makes the gargle solution pleasant to the taste.
Propolis is less known here than in Eastern Europe, where this substance made by bees has been used successfully for generations.
Propolis is a natural product with scientifically proven antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal effects. You can get propolis from beekeepers and many health food stores.
Our recipe is about the essential oils found in the lemon peel.
These have an antibacterial effect and help to drive unwanted bacteria out of your troubled throat. Alternatively, you can use pure lemon peel essential oil.
The root helps against inflammation and can relieve pain. This is due to the main active ingredient, gingerol, which helps you relieve your sore throat in a natural way and make it heal.
Instead of fresh ginger, you can also use ginger juice, which you can buy in health food stores. Just make sure it’s pure juice with no water or added sugar. Try it!
Instructions for use
Use the gargle solution at least 3 times a day, more often if necessary. Directly from the refrigerator, the cold also provides pain relief.
If your symptoms do not improve after 3 days or if you notice that pus has formed, please be sure to consult a doctor!
