Do you remember how your grandma or mother used natural means to drive away insects when you were little ?
Some resort to chemicals straight away, but others keep natural traditions to drive away the unpopular flies or mosquitoes. Herbal plants and other natural remedies that you can find in your pantry can be very useful here.
This post will tell you more about natural insect protection remedies that you can use at home. So you can do without chemicals and at the same time protect your health and the environment.
General home remedies for insects
These natural remedies help repel various types of insects without the need for chemical products that are harmful to health and the environment. At the same time, these agents ensure a pleasant scent in the house. The best options are:
Pyrethrum or chrysanthemum
This plant helps drive away ants, cicadas, dust mites and aphids. It is usually planted around the garden or around fields to prevent vermin infestations from wiping out crops.
You can use pyrethrum as a natural insect repellent in your garden.
Chamomile or Matricaria
This plant is very useful against mosquitoes and flies. Chamomile is even more effective in combination with lavender and citronella. Plant these at the entrance to the house and near doors and windows.
You can also put a few branches in different rooms.
basil

You can use fresh as well as dried basil to drive away mosquitoes and flies with what we consider to be a delicious aroma.
Take advantage of the opportunity and also use basil to season various dishes!
lavender
Flies, mosquitoes, lice and moths cannot stand this intensely fragrant plant. You can simply hang a few fresh twigs upside down to keep the unpleasant bugs away.
It’s best to plant a few lavender plants in the garden. Don’t forget that they love sunny spots!
Citronella
This wonderfully fragrant plant is very well known for its effectiveness against mosquitoes and flies. It is also used in gastronomy as it gives off an exquisite aroma.
You can sow citronella yourself in a sunny spot or set up a few twigs in different rooms.
Lemon Thyme

This plant keeps a wide variety of insects away, but needs a sunny spot. For example, if you want to avoid mosquito bites, it is a good idea to cut off a few leaves from the plant and rub them on your arms and neck.
Before doing this, however, you should do a small test to see if you are allergic to it or not.
rosemary
Rosemary is particularly effective against mosquitoes. You can set up a few twigs in the kitchen or hang them over the garden table. It is also very helpful to crush a few rosemary leaves and rub them on your skin.
Natural remedy for cockroaches

Cockroaches are undoubtedly the most hated insects around the world, and some cockroaches can even fly.
Studies have shown that cockroaches can even survive an atom bomb, so many believe that you have no chance against these vermin. Fortunately, this is not the case.
Boric acid is the best solution to the problem so far. This is easily available and relatively inexpensive.
This antiseptic is also used to kill ants in many households. Boric acid is available from pharmacies and even some well-stocked grocery stores.
Use small amounts and only in specific areas, especially when children or pets are around.
Mix half a glass of water (100 ml) with 2 tablespoons of bosic acid (20 g) and use it to moisten a cloth that you place in the places preferred by the cockroaches.
Another possibility is to mix 3 parts boric acid with 1 part sugar. Sprinkle this mixture in the desired spots in the kitchen as well as in the bathroom (in nooks and crannies, and behind the furniture).
Sugar attracts the unpopular insects, boric acid destroys them.
Natural remedies against flies
Flies are annoying, unsanitary and can transmit disease. However, a thorough cleaning of the house is not always enough to drive these away. But there are several home remedies that can be very effective in helping with this.
Aromatic plants
Calendula or mint are plants that drive away flies. The best thing to do is to set them up on doors and windows. You can also use fresh or dried twigs, so it smells wonderful everywhere at the same time.
Essential oils

We recommend a homemade fragrance that will keep flies away. You will need a small glass vessel and a piece of cotton (a kitchen sponge is also suitable).
Mix 20 drops of each of the following essential oils:
- lavender
- eucalyptus
- mint
- Citronella
You use this to moisten a cloth that you put in a glass container. Seal the jar and let it sit for a day. Then you set it up in critical places. If you want this remedy to work longer, you can cap it once the flies are gone.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is not only recommended because of its pungent smell, it also has the ability to remove germs.
- You will need half a cup (125 ml) of apple cider vinegar and 20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil.
- Mix the two ingredients together, then pour the result into a spray bottle.
- Use this on a variety of surfaces, such as the kitchen counter or table, to keep the pesky flies away.
Herbal spray
This option is excellent for those who do not have essential oils on hand.
