Especially when you have a cold or on an airplane there is often pressure on the ears. However, there are several different methods to deal with this pesky problem.

Everyone knows the feeling: noises come through only muffled, you can hear your own voice when speaking or the pressure on your ears is painful. The causes can be different, but the tips against it always help. Read here how you can get pressure on the ears and ear congestion under control!

The feeling of “pressure on the ears” can have many causes. If the feeling lasts more than 2 days, you should definitely consult a doctor. He then clarifies what the problem is.

The pressure on the ears can hide serious diseases such as: inflammation of the ear canal and / or the eardrum, a hole in the eardrum, a foreign body in the ear canal, tube catarrh, otitis media, sudden hearing loss and more!

Since the sense of hearing is very important, you shouldn’t “doctor around” yourself for too long! Most of the time, however, the feeling of pressure can clearly be attributed to a cause: severe cold or insufficient pressure equalization.

It often happens in an airplane during take-off and landing, but also when driving in the mountains: one ear or both ears fall shut. If you are unlucky you will also develop pain.

The reason for the pressure on the ears is the change in air pressure. This creates a pressure difference between the ear canal and the middle ear, which leads to a bulging of the eardrum. This then feels as if the ears are “closed”.

This problem can usually be solved quite simply by swallowing or yawning. This can be supported by chewing gum or sucking a piece of candy. If none of this helps, hold your nose, press your lips together and breathe out forcefully through your closed nose.

If you get on a plane or travel to the mountains with a cold, the mucous membranes in the nose and throat are swollen and problems with pressure equalization are inevitable. Use decongestant nasal sprays or inhalation to keep the mucous membranes puffy.

There are also special ear plugs in pharmacies or acoustician stores that reduce the problem of insufficient pressure equalization.

Your head is buzzing, your nose is runny, your throat is scratchy – and then your ears too! Not nice when a cold has struck like that! But there are methods how to get your ears “free” again!

Constantly impeded nasal breathing (also for example due to an allergy!) Leads to a ventilation disorder of the middle ear. This leads to a negative pressure in the middle ear and thus to a considerable amount of pressure in the ear.

A cold also leads to underpressure or, in very rare cases (e.g. after blowing your nose ), to overpressure in the ear.

Of course, this problem can also occur with any sinus infection. So you need to provide ventilation. Most of the time, all mucous membranes are swollen and mucus also hinders ventilation. Here it helps to drink a lot so that the mucus liquefies.

Even  inhaling often brings relief. You can also use a nasal rinse with salt water. Decongestant sprays help to swell the mucous membranes for a few hours and can therefore also help against pressure on the ears.

Ear wax in and of itself is not harmful. On the contrary! It moisturizes the ear canal and maintains the protective acid mantle of the skin. The lard also protects against infections and transports dirt, dust and dead skin cells towards the auricle.

Sometimes the body produces a little too much wax. Then a plug can form, which creates an uncomfortable feeling of pressure. Important: Never try to remove it with a cotton swab! You just push the lard deeper into your ear and make the situation much worse!

Dripping in water is also not a good idea, because water can swell the lard and make things worse! There are over-the-counter remedies available in pharmacies that can be used to loosen ear wax and remove it yourself at home.

To do this, a certain liquid is usually simply dripped into the ear, which then has to take effect. If this doesn’t help, you really have to see a doctor, who can suction off the plug quickly and easily. If you always produce too much ear wax, it makes sense to see a doctor every 3 months as a precaution so that a solid plug cannot form.

Finally, a few general tips. Never put objects of any kind, such as pens, tweezers, or chopsticks, in your ear to remove a wad of wax! Before using decongestant nasal sprays or other recommended items, seek advice from your pharmacist.

You only have one ear – and that is what you need to protect!
