Going to bed with a full or an empty stomach?

There are different opinions as to whether it is better  to go to sleep on a full or an empty stomach. What is more recommendable? Neither extreme is healthy. Read on, we’ll explain why.

Go to sleep on an empty stomach

Many think that they can lose weight more easily if they go to sleep without dinner. But that is not the case. Food is also important in the evening, because there is nothing more unpleasant than being woken up by hunger in the middle of the night.

Everything we eat in the evening makes us fat”.  This statement is also wrong. Those who wake up starving in the morning usually eat everything they can find in the fridge. Some even get up at night to snack.

But this is anything but healthy. Especially because when there is cravings, the desire for fast, high-fat and high-calorie food is very great.

Extremes are never good for your health. For this reason, we recommend having a healthy dinner.  But what does that look like?

Various research studies show that there should be at least an hour and a half between dinner and bed rest.  During this time you can take care of the dishes, read a book, watch TV or make preparations for the next day.

If you have dinner relatively early , the food can be digested before you go to sleep and does not affect the organism’s nightly activities.

But even if it gets later, you shouldn’t completely skip dinner. A light soup, a yogurt with oatmeal, tea with a wholemeal toast …  Make sure that your dinner is light and easy to digest.

Dinner should be high in carbohydrates and low in protein. It’s best to stay away from saturated fats, as these often lead to indigestion and gas. This has a negative impact on the quality of sleep.

If you come home late from work or university, you can have a bite to eat before you go to bed.

Because studies also show that going to bed on an empty stomach has negative effects on muscles. When you are hungry, your brain is on alert.

Because of this, if you don’t find rest at night, your metabolism slows down and ghrelin levels rise. This hormone stimulates the appetite, which is why you are tormented by a huge feeling of hunger in the morning.

Those who go to bed without eating usually sleep less. And as I said, the muscles suffer because they receive less energy. So skipping dinner to lose weight is not a good idea. You shouldn’t skip other main meals either!

Sleep with a full stomach?

Going to bed on a full stomach is not a good idea. Because in this case, enzymes and acids are produced to aid digestion. The blood is also concentrated in this area, which leads to fatigue. However, you should still wait a little longer to sleep!

Eating too much or the wrong food in the evening increases the risk of obesity. Heartburn can also develop as a result. This often leads to sleep problems, nightmares, etc.

Dinner doesn’t automatically make you fat. It all depends on the type and amount! Don’t forget that carbohydrates are no longer recommended four hours before going to bed.

During the night, digestion and metabolism slow down. This can lead to flatulence or discomfort if food residues ferment in the intestine.

You can rest briefly after eating if you want, but you shouldn’t sleep right afterwards! Enjoy this moment by having a cozy chat with your partner or family on the sofa! Of course you can also read or watch TV.
