The sciatic nerve

The sciatic nerve is a very thick and at the same time the longest nerve in the human body. Among other things, it consists of nerve fibers from the spinal cord. The sciatic nerve extends from the lower back to the feet, where it originates at about the level of the hips. From there it runs along the back of the thighs and over the hollows of the knees down to the feet.

Depending on its location, the sciatic nerve can cause pain anywhere if it is pinched, irritated, or injured. Sciatica pain is often caused by damage to the intervertebral disc and radiates from the back into the respective leg.

The most common causes of sciatica pain, however, are muscle tension and blockages in the vertebral bodies, as well as problems with the intervertebral disc such as a protruding disc. In all of these cases, the sciatic nerve (sciatic nerve) becomes irritated or pinched and pain develops.

What helps against sciatica pain?

There are many ways you can help relieve the pain the sciatic nerve can cause. In the following we would like to introduce you to a few options. Since the most common cause of pain is muscle tension, heat can help loosen muscles and gently release vertebral blockages. A hot full bath, an afternoon in the sauna, a heating pad on the back or a warm patch on the skin provide deep warmth over a longer period of time. A hot water bottle in your back (for example, leaning against the back of your chair) will also help.


Studies have found that stress promotes the development of sciatic pain. Try to be aware of what is stressing you and change your priorities accordingly. In addition to sciatica pain, stress can lead to heart disease and other health issues. So: let go of stress and pain!

Soothe the sciatic nerve with massage


In order to loosen tense muscles, not only heat is useful, but also a massage. You don’t necessarily have to go to a massage practice, a careful massage from friends, your partner or even just a massage chair can have a beneficial and relaxing effect. It is important to ensure relaxation during the massage and not additional tension due to pressure pain!


It sounds paradoxical: you actually want to stay on the sofa or in bed forever because of the pain and never, ever move again. But movement in particular is so important to relieve pain and prevent subsequent symptoms! Discuss with your doctor which mild pain relievers you can take that will allow you to move freely.

If the pain persists and is not alleviated, you will only cramp even more, which will only worsen and prolong your suffering. Pain causes you to adopt a relieving posture, which also leads to tension and thus puts additional strain on your muscles. So a pain reliever really makes sense here.

Statistically speaking, smokers suffer more often and more persistently from sciatica pain than non-smokers. Once the pain is there, giving up cigarettes can cause blood circulation to increase and tense muscles to be better supplied and relaxed. It is also advisable to stop smoking completely to prevent the pain from recurring.
